We live in a world where social media is something that we use on a daily basis, however, things were not always this way. It can be hard to think about life before social media, but there was a time when we didn’t know about hashtags, likes or status updates.
Whilst there have been plenty of amazing things to come out of social media and there is no denying that it has brought plenty of positives to our lives, there are also some ways that social media can be negative. In fact, in some cases, social media can actually be toxic to our mental wellbeing, to know how to avoid these things, let’s take a look at why it is the case.
It is addictive
There seems to be plenty in the media at the moment about whether or not social media addiction is a real thing that needs to be treated. However, no matter how you look at it, people can and do rely on social media quite heavily. Social media addiction is not looking at it every so often, it is being reliant on social media and feeling that you simply cannot get by without checking your profile or scrolling through your newsfeed, in turn causing you to miss out on key times in the real world.
It can make you feel sad and alone
We like to think that social media means that we never feel alone and that we always feel happy, however, this is not always the case. Seeing everyone around you having fun, spending time with their loved ones, especially when you are not doing the same thing, well that is going to have a detrimental impact on how you feel about yourself and how you feel about the world around you. In fact, by spending too much time on social media, you can actually feel lonelier than ever.
You will end up comparing your life to others around you
Another thing that social media can do is encourage you to compare your life to those around you. You will see the things that your friends get up to and the brand-new things that they have bought. This can leave you feeling empty and that you are missing out. However, the important thing to remember when it comes to social media is that people can lie about what is going on in their lives, making out that things are much better than they really are.
Of course, there are plenty of great things about social media, however, there are also negative things to using it on a daily basis, especially to your mental health.
